CONDITIONS THAT CAN CAUSE MALE GENITAL SKIN DISEASE

Bowen’s Disease

This is considered to be a precancerous condition. Specialist creams such as imiquimod, or photodynamic therapy are effective in reversing the condition.

Fordyce’s Spots

Whilst normal, some patients find this condition to be very distressing. The role of lasers in the treatment of Fordyce’s spots is well established. Dr Madan has been treating Fordyce’s spots successfully with carbon dioxide laser for many years.

Psoriasis

Not all psoriasis treatments can be applied to genital skin as it is delicate and can cause discomfort and irritation. Specialist creams can be prescribed to alleviate the symptoms of psoriasis on the genitals.

Lichen Planus

This inflammatory condition can present as white lines on the mucosa or the red of the genitals. It can be quite itchy and may be the only sign of lichen planus. A biopsy may be required to confirm the diagnosis and to offer adequate treatment.

Lichen Sclerosis

This can appear as white spots or red erosions on genital skin. Good treatments are available.

Fungal Infections

Candida infections are not uncommon and can point towards a diagnosis of diabetes especially if recurrent. If applicable, both partners should be treated simultaneously.

Scabies and Crab Lice

Whilst not pleasant at all to be diagnosed with scabies and crab lice infestation, these conditions are curable with appropriate treatment.

Scrotal Cysts

Sebaceous cysts can be single or multiple. These are easily removed by laser or surgery.

Skin Cancers

Skin cancer can appear around the genital area.

Vitiligo

White spot disease can affect the genital skin. This can be addressed by topical therapy and light (excimer) treatment.

Warts

Warts and verrucae can be sexually transmitted. Genital warts should be treated aggressively as a risk of cross-transmission and progression of wart affected skin to skin cancer is well recognised.

Zoon’s Balanitis

Zoon’s balanitis describes inflammation of the head of the penis (glans penis) and foreskin. It usually affects middle-aged to elderly men who have not been circumcised.
