Living with Acne and its affects
Acne can cause a lot of anxiety for people, affecting their self-esteem and even causing depression. For some people, this might just mean a lack of self-confidence in social situations, but for others, it might lead to serious psychological problems. So it is important for acne sufferers to know that help is available.
Although often thought of as a teenage problem, acne can sometimes persist into adulthood and about 5% of women and 1% of men have acne over the age of 25. Even the likes of celebrities such as Katy Perry and Cameron Diaz are reported to struggle with acne.
What causes acne?
Contrary to popular belief, acne is not caused by a poor diet or by having unclean skin. Triggers can be anything from new cosmetics to certain foods and, for some people, whatever they do, they still get spot breakouts.
Spots are caused by blocked hair follicles in the skin. Tiny sebaceous glands attached to these follicles produce sebum to help lubricate the hair and the skin to stop it drying out. Acne occurs when the glands produce too much sebum, which mixes with dead skin cells and causes a blockage in the follicle.
There are a number of reasons for the glands producing too much sebum. This includes hormonal imbalance – for example, many people have acne during puberty, some women have breakouts before or during menstruation, and others can suffer from acne when they are pregnant or during menopause. More than 80% of cases of adult acne occur in women.
How do I get rid of acne?
At Everything Skin, our highly experienced consultant dermatologists have been treating acne for a very long time and offer a range of treatments which are tailored to a patient’s needs.
Laser treatment, for example, can improve acne by unplugging blocked pores, killing or reducing bacteria, reducing skin inflammation and preventing sebum production.
Our acne laser treatment offers fast and effective treatment for acne and acne scarring. Typically, patients will need a course of treatments initially and then may need to top up treatments to keep on top of it. Laser treatment works by delivering low-frequency light pulses which stimulate the body’s natural responses to treat skin conditions such as acne.
All our treatments are carried out by consultant dermatologists who all hold contracts in leading NHS hospitals.
