AMBULATORY PHLEBECTOMY IN MANCHESTER

WHAT IS PHLEBECTOMY PROCEDURE?

Phlebectomy, also known as ambulatory or micro-phlebectomy, is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to remove varicose veins. It involves making small incisions along the leg to extract damaged veins that are close to the surface of the skin. This procedure is typically performed under local anaesthesia, allowing patients to walk immediately after surgery, hence the term “ambulatory.” Phlebectomy is often used for treating larger veins that are not suitable for sclerotherapy or laser treatments.

Is Phlebectomy effective for varicose veins?

Phlebectomy has a very high success rate, with minimal recurrence of varicose veins. It also results in quick recovery, minimal scarring and a significant reduction in both the appearance and symptoms of varicose veins.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Phlebectomy is generally a safe and effective procedure, but it may have some side effects. Commonly, patients experience mild bruising and swelling around the incision sites, which typically subsides within a few weeks. There may also be some temporary pain or discomfort, easily managed with over-the-counter pain relief. Numbness or tingling can occur if small nerves near the veins are affected, though this is usually temporary. Small scars may form at the incision sites, but they tend to fade over time. In rare cases, more serious side effects like infections or superficial blood clots (thrombophlebitis) can occur, but these are uncommon with proper aftercare.
Patients are usually advised to wear compression stockings for one to two weeks to reduce swelling and promote blood circulation. It’s recommended to keep the leg elevated when resting and avoid prolonged standing or sitting for the first few days. Light walking is encouraged to help with circulation and prevent blood clots, but strenuous activities, such as heavy lifting or intense exercise, should be avoided for about one to two weeks.
