The majority of people have moles on their body, with some having many moles on areas of the body that are hard to view such as your back. As a result, it can sometimes be difficult to know whether a mole has changed or whether a mark on your skin is new.
Moles occur when cells in the skin grow in a cluster instead of being spread throughout the skin, these cells are called melanocytes and they make the pigment that gives skin its natural colour, as a result, you may find your moles darken after exposure to the sun, during the teen years and during pregnancy.
Having moles on the skin is common, but if they have changed, if new ones appear or you think they look different for any reason you may want to get them checked out, diagnosed and treated by a specialist.
At Everything Skin Clinic, we can provide full body mole checks via a detailed dermoscopic examination, as well as mole mapping using the state-of-the-art fotofinder machine.
This state of the art mole checking service uses computer-assisted mole mapping and digital photo-dermoscopy surveillance service so that we can check your moles for you. This is particularly useful for people who are known to have an increased risk of the development of malignant melanoma.
Melanoma among 25-49 year olds has increased by 70% since 1990, emphasising the importance of checking your moles regularly.
FULL BODY AUTOMATED MOLE MAPPING WITH FOTOFINDER ATBM
Mole mapping is part of our mole checking service and is conducted by a highly qualified consultant dermatologist. The dermatologist is an expert in skin cancer and will carry out the mole check using cutting edge skin-imaging technology; the FotoFinder system.
This system provides state-of-the-art laser guided computer mapping of your entire skin and high resolution mapping of individual moles. This part of the mole checking service uses an artificial intelligence algorithm to assess each mole and provide cancer risk analysis.
The images the FotoFinder system takes are analysed by your dermatologist, mapped and recorded. It’s ability to compare images and identify changes in the appearance of moles makes it a highly accurate tool in the development of skin cancer.
As part of the mole checking service, you will be provided with a record of your mole map and the digital images will be securely stored for future reference.
You will be invited back for an annual review to check for any changes to your moles, but of course if you notice any changes to your moles sooner, please contact us to make an appointment.
During your mole checking appointment, if a mole or lesion requires further investigation, part of or all the mole may need to be removed using our mole removal treatment so it can be assessed for cancer. Your specialist will advise you on this during your appointment.

MOLE MAPPING FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
We recommend an annual review of your moles to identify any changes which may have occurred since your last appointment. However those at risk of skin cancer might need to be seen more frequently than this. We will send you a reminder to book your annual check. If you notice any changes to your moles between appointments, please contact us to book a mole check appointment.
At Everything Skin Clinic we are able to remove your mole if it is suspicious for being cancerous, or if you would like it removed for cosmetic reasons. Your consultant will discuss your options with you during your appointment if required.
Moles can look very different to each other which can make it hard to identify moles which may be worrying, the key thing you are looking for is if your mole is changing. When checking your body for moles, you are looking for any changes to the size, colour of shape. You are also looking for itching, bleeding or crusting of moles which are signs you need to book an appointment to get your moles checked by a consultant dermatologist. When checking for moles, know your ABCDEs and get your moles professional checked if:
A Asymmetry – one half doesn’t match the other half
B Borders – the mole has uneven borders
C Colour – there is a variety of colours in the mole (brown, tan or black)
D Diameter – the mole grows larger than a pencil eraser (¼ inch)
E Evolution – the mole evolves in size, shape, colour, elevation or there is a new characteristic
A mole check is with one of our consultant dermatologists who will use a dermatoscope to look at your mole(s) to identify any cause for concern. They will diagnose your mole as either benign or cancerous and then discuss next steps with you.
A full body automated mole map using the Fotofinder ATBM machine uses technology to capture high resolution images of your moles which can be used to compare changes in your moles over time. Your moles will be checked using an artificial intelligence algorithm to assess each mole and provide cancer risk analysis and also assessed by your consultant dermatologist.
Our FotoFinder mole mapping service is suited to adults who have a large number of moles across their body, or for those who wish to monitor their skin. As early detection is key in treating skin cancer, it is recommended that moles are checked regularly. If you only have a small number of moles on your body, we recommend you book in for a single mole check with us.
Mole mapping at Everything Skin Clinic takes approximately 1 hour.
