SCLEROTHERAPY IN MANCHESTER
WHAT IS SCLEROTHERAPY?
How Does Sclerotherapy Work?
- Preparing for the operation: The patient is positioned supine, and the physician cleanses the epidermis surrounding the targeted blood vessels. The provider may use a magnifying device or specialised lighting to see the vessels more clearly.
- Injection of the solution of sclerosant: A healthcare professional injects the sclerosant solution directly into the targeted blood vessels using a fine catheter. The solution causes the inner membrane of the vessels to become inflamed and adhere together by irritating them.
- The injection of a sclerosant solution causes the disintegration and absorption of vein walls. This obstruction prevents blood passage through the diseased veins. The body absorbs the occluded veins over time, and they progressively disappear.
- After administering an injection, the healthcare provider may compress the affected area to promote healing. Compression can be accomplished through the use of compression hosiery or compression bandages. Compression helps preserve the integrity of blood vessels, reduces edoema, and promotes healing.
- Typically, multiple sessions of sclerotherapy are required to obtain the desired results. The number of sessions required is dependent on the extent of the vessels being treated and the patient’s response to treatment. Typically, sessions are separated by a few weeks to enable the body to absorb the treated veins and the healthcare provider to evaluate the patient’s progress.
- Veins that have been treated typically diminish progressively over the course of several weeks to months. Common adverse effects at the injection site include bruising, temporary discoloration, and minor discomfort. The majority of patients can resume normal activities immediately or within a day following the procedure.
