RHINOPHYMA TREATMENT IN CHEADLE, MANCHESTER

WHAT IS RHINOPHYMA?

Rhinophyma is a skin condition characterised by the thickening and enlargement of the nose, leading to a bulbous, bumpy appearance. It is a severe form of rosacea, particularly affecting men more than women. Rhinophyma develops gradually over time, often after years of untreated rosacea, and is typically associated with excessive growth of sebaceous (oil) glands and fibrous tissue. The nose may become red, swollen and covered in irregular lumps, sometimes causing discomfort or breathing issues.

Rhinophyma occurs almost exclusively in middle-aged to elderly Caucasian men but can also affect women and darker skin patients.

At Everything Skin Clinic, we are dedicated to providing exceptional care in the diagnosis and treatment of Rhinophyma. We use Co2 laser treatment to address the cosmetic challenges posed by Rhinophyma.

Co2 Laser Rhinophyma Treatment

CO2 laser treatment is a medical procedure that uses a carbon dioxide laser to precisely remove damaged layers of skin. By targeting the outer skin layers, it stimulates the growth of new, healthy skin cells. This treatment is widely used for conditions such as rhinophyma, acne scars, wrinkles, and sun damage. Highly effective in resurfacing the skin and enhancing its texture, CO2 laser therapy delivers noticeable improvements. It is a minimally invasive procedure with short recovery times, making it a popular choice for those seeking significant results with minimal downtime.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Early-stage rhinophyma is marked by subtle changes in the nose’s appearance and texture. Typical signs include ongoing redness, swelling, excess oiliness and the appearance of visible blood vessels on the skin. The skin may also begin to thicken slightly, leading to a bulbous or uneven nose texture. As these symptoms tend to progress slowly, it’s crucial to seek early medical advice for accurate diagnosis and treatment, which can help prevent the condition from worsening.

The exact cause of rhinophyma is unclear, though it is linked to rosacea flare-ups, possibly exacerbated by factors such as genetics, sun exposure, alcohol consumption and stress.

Preventing rhinophyma primarily involves managing the underlying condition of rosacea and minimising triggers that can exacerbate symptoms. Key preventive measures include using medications prescribed by a dermatologist to control rosacea flare-ups and avoiding common triggers like spicy foods, alcohol, extreme temperatures and stress. Protecting your skin from sun exposure by using sunscreen is also important, as UV rays can worsen inflammation. Maintaining a gentle skincare routine helps avoid irritation and seeking early treatment if you notice signs of rhinophyma can prevent the condition from progressing. Consistently following these steps can help reduce the risk of developing rhinophyma.

Laser treatment is often considered a good option for rhinophyma, especially in more advanced stages. Co2 laser therapy, in particular, is effective in removing excess tissue, reshaping the nose and improving skin texture. It is a precise and minimally invasive procedure that can achieve significant cosmetic and functional improvements with relatively short recovery times.

The cost of the rhinophyma treatment starts from £2783, but it may vary depending on the severity of the condition and the individual case.

It is not uncommon for patients with rhinophyma to be stigmatised by their condition. Although there is little evidence to suggest the role of chronic alcoholism in rhinophyma, the term ‘whisky nose’ unfortunately almost always gets associated with this condition. Many patients with rhinophyma can be teetotallers or consume very little alcohol.
