CRYOTHERAPY IN MANCHESTER

What is Cryotherapy and how does it work?

Cryotherapy is a medical treatment that uses extremely cold temperatures to target and treat specific areas of the body. It is commonly used in dermatology to treat localised skin concerns such as skin tags, warts, verrucas, and solar lentigos (age spots). During the procedure, the intense cold destroys abnormal or unwanted tissue, triggering a natural healing process. As the skin responds to the cold, blood vessels constrict and then dilate, increasing circulation and delivering oxygen and nutrients to the treated area. This helps flush out inflammation, supports healing, and restores healthy skin.

Cryotherapy: Conditions and Benefits

Cryotherapy is a minimally invasive therapy. The goal of cryotherapy is to reduce inflammation and pain, improve circulation, and promote healing in injured or damaged tissue. This type of treatment removes damaged or diseased tissue. Most people recover quickly from the procedure and with little pain. In dermatology, cryotherapy can help treat the following conditions:

  • Freckles and Solar Lentigos – This involves ‘freezing off’ the lesion in a quick and painless procedure using cold liquid nitrogen
  • Warts and Verrucas – Cryotherapy can effectively remove Warts and Verrucas by freezing them with liquid nitrogen. The treatment causes the wart to die and eventually fall off.
  • Skin Tags – Cryotherapy can also be used to remove skin tags. The process involves applying liquid nitrogen to the skin tag, which freezes and destroys the tissue.
  • Psoriasis – Cryotherapy can provide temporary relief from the symptoms of psoriasis by reducing inflammation and itchiness.
  • Acne – Cryotherapy can help reduce inflammation associated with acne, and may help to kill the bacteria responsible for causing breakouts
  • Cherry Angiomas (Campbell de Morgan Spots) – These red vascular marks can be treated by freezing the blood vessels, leading to shrinking or disappearance of the angiomas.
  • Actinic Keratoses – Cryotherapy can be used to treat precancerous skin lesions known as actinic keratoses. The treatment destroys the abnormal cells and encourages the growth of healthy new skin.
  • Seborrhoeic Keratosis – These harmless but often irritating growths are treated by freezing. This causes them to dry out and flake away, unveiling healthier skin.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Cryotherapy may cause some pain or discomfort during or after treatment. It’s common for the treated area to become red, swollen, or form blisters—these are typical signs of the healing process and generally settle within a few days. Some people may also experience changes in skin pigmentation, with the treated area appearing lighter or darker than the surrounding skin, which is more likely in those with darker skin tones. Though uncommon, there is also a slight risk of infection, so it’s essential to keep the area clean and dry. Your dermatologist will review all potential risks and benefits with you before the procedure.

Dermatologists successfully treat many problems with cryotherapy. Some skin conditions treated with cryotherapy do not require any special care after treatment.

You may experience some benefits after a single cryotherapy session, but the treatment tends to be most effective when done regularly. Our expert dermatology team can advise you on the most suitable treatment plan for your needs.

To support healing after cryotherapy, it’s important to keep the treated area clean and dry, avoid picking at any blisters or scabs, and apply a soothing ointment if advised by your dermatologist. Protect the area from sun exposure with SPF once healed to minimise pigmentation changes. Most discomfort and redness subside within a few days, but if you notice signs of infection like increasing pain, swelling, or pus, contact your clinic.
