EVLA (Endovenous laser ablation) in Manchester
WHAT IS EVLA?
Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA) is a modern, minimally invasive procedure for treating varicose veins. It is a walk-in and walk-out service under local anaesthesia. Using laser energy, the affected veins are closed and sealed from within. EVLA is widely considered a safe and effective alternative to traditional vein stripping, offering benefits such as faster recovery time, minimal scarring and a lower risk of complications. Endovenous Laser Ablation is rated by NICE as the Gold Standard with success rates in excess of 98%.
This procedure is usually done with local anaesthesia, and most patients can resume their normal activities shortly afterwards. EVLA is a safe and effective alternative to more invasive surgeries for varicose vein treatment.

What are the benefits of EVLA treatment?
- 98%+ Success Rate – One of the most effective and reliable treatments for varicose veins.
- NICE Gold Standard Treatment – Recognised by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) as the Gold Standard for varicose vein treatment.
- Minimally invasive procedure: EVLA avoids large incisions and extensive recovery periods.
- Quick recovery: Most patients can resume normal activities within a day or two after treatment.
- High success rate: This highly effective procedure relieves symptoms like pain, swelling, and leg heaviness.
- Minimal scarring: The targeted approach and use of ultrasound guidance result in minimal scarring, making it a cosmetically appealing option.
- Lower risk of complications: The precision of the procedure reduces the likelihood of complications.
- Patient comfort: Tumescent anaesthesia ensures the procedure is comfortable throughout.
- Safe and efficient: EVLA offers a reliable method to treat varicose veins with minimal disruption to daily activities.
ENDOVENOUS LASER PROCEDURE
During the procedure, a needle is inserted into the targeted vein near the knee or ankle under ultrasound guidance. A thin wire is then passed through the vein, followed by the insertion of a long, flexible sheath similar in size to a pen refill, carefully positioned using ultrasound imaging. At this point, tumescent anaesthesia is applied around the vein to serve three key functions: it numbs the area to ensure the procedure is painless, compresses the vein around the laser sheath to maximise treatment efficiency, and protects surrounding tissues from the laser heat. Once the anaesthesia is in place, a laser fibre is inserted through the sheath and guided to the top of the vein. The laser is activated, and as the fibre and sheath are withdrawn, the vein is effectively shut. Over time, the body naturally reabsorbs the treated vein, making EVLA a highly effective and minimally invasive solution for treating varicose veins.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
IS EVLA TREATMENT EFFECTIVE FOR VARICOSE VEINS?
The success rate of Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA) for treating varicose veins in the UK is quite high. Clinical studies show that EVLA has a success rate of around 95%, which has been confirmed by various research and clinical trials.
WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS OF EVLA?
EVLA (Endovenous Laser Ablation) is a generally safe procedure for treating varicose veins, but it may cause mild side effects. Common issues include bruising, swelling and mild pain or discomfort, all of which typically resolve within a few weeks. Some patients may experience temporary tightness, numbness or tingling sensations in the treated area.
WHAT KIND OF AFTERCARE IS NEEDED FOLLOWING THE EVLA PROCEDURE?
Aftercare following the EVLA procedure is important to ensure proper healing and avoid complications. Patients are usually advised to wear compression stockings for one to two weeks to help reduce swelling, improve blood flow and support the treated veins. Light physical activity, such as walking, is encouraged to promote circulation but strenuous activities and prolonged standing or sitting should be avoided for a few days. Pain or discomfort can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers. It’s also important to attend follow-up appointments to monitor progress and rule out complications like blood clots or infections.
DOES ENDOVENOUS LASER ABLATION HURT?
Most patients feel only slight discomfort or pressure during the procedure. Some describe a mild pulling or heat sensation as the laser is applied, but pain is typically minimal. After the procedure, there may be mild soreness or bruising, which can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers.
