What is a Mole Check?

A mole check is a thorough examination of your moles to look for any changes that could indicate potential skin health concerns, such as melanoma or other types of skin cancer. During a mole check, a dermatologist will carefully assess the size, shape, colour, and texture of your moles, as well as any new spots on your skin. This proactive approach is essential because changes in moles, such as asymmetry, irregular borders, multiple colours, or rapid growth, can be early warning signs of severe conditions. Regular mole checks help detect potential issues early, significantly improving treatment outcomes and maintaining overall skin health.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING A MOLE CHECK?

During a mole check, a trained dermatologist or clinician carefully examines your skin to assess any moles or spots that may look unusual or have changed over time. The process is quick, non-invasive, and typically begins with a brief conversation about your medical history and any concerns you may have. The clinician will then perform a visual inspection of your skin — this can be a focused check of specific moles or a full-body examination, depending on your needs. A special tool called a dermatoscope may be used to get a closer look at certain moles, allowing for a more detailed view of their structure and pigmentation. In some cases, photos of your moles may be taken for future comparison. If anything appears suspicious, the clinician will explain the next steps, which might include monitoring the mole, recommending a biopsy, or referring you for further evaluation. The goal is always early detection and prevention.

If you’re concerned about a specific mole and would like it checked by a specialist, you can book a mole check at Everything Skin Clinics. During this appointment, the mole will be scanned using a dermatoscope by a specialist, and the images will be reviewed. If the consultant identifies anything concerning, you’ll be invited to the clinic for further examination. If you have multiple moles you’re worried about, we recommend booking a full-body mole check or mole mapping instead.

Please note that we are unable to assess moles located in intimate areas, on the eyelids or tops of the ears, on tattoos, those covered by excessive hair, or any that are wet, open, or bleeding. If you’re unsure whether your mole can be checked, please don’t hesitate to contact us before booking. Should further investigation be required, your specialist may recommend removing part or all of the mole for laboratory analysis to check for cancer. This will be discussed with you during your appointment.

If you have multiple moles on your body which you would like to be checked by an expert, book a full body mole check at Everything Skin Clinic with a consultant dermatologist. Your moles will be assessed and if your consultant is concerned with any of them and they require further investigation or treatment, this will be discussed with you. Our dermatologists are highly qualified, hospital based consultants who are all members of the British Association of Dermatologists, the Royal Society of Medicine, the General Medical Council and the Royal College of Physicians.

If you have many moles—especially in areas like your back—it can be difficult to monitor them on your own. That’s where our mole mapping service comes in. At Everything Skin Clinic, we use advanced computer-assisted mole mapping and digital photo-dermoscopy to document and track your moles over time. This technology helps our dermatologists detect subtle changes and differentiate between harmless moles and those that may be cancerous, such as melanoma—the most serious form of skin cancer. Early detection is crucial, and this level of detail isn’t possible with the naked eye alone.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

A mole check is typically a quick and straightforward procedure. A single mole check usually takes around 10 to 15 minutes, while a full body mole check can take 20 to 30 minutes, depending on the number of moles and the complexity of the assessment.
No, a mole check is not painful. It’s a completely non-invasive and gentle procedure. There are no needles, cuts, or discomfort involved.
If you’re only having a single mole check, you usually only need to expose the area where the mole is located.

For a full body mole check, you will typically need to undress to your underwear so the clinician can thoroughly examine your skin from head to toe. This includes often-overlooked areas like the back, scalp, feet, and behind the ears, where skin cancers can also develop.
